The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced more than 1.8 billion dollars in funding to states and territories for combating the opioid epidemic.

In a press release, officials said that the State Opioid Response grants are intended to give states flexible funding to support prevention, treatment and recovery services in a way that meets the need of each state. About 28 million is going to West Virginia this year for that goal.

The funding is also intended to help the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention work with local governments to compile real-time data on drug overdoses.

West Virginia will be awarded an additional 7 million dollars, one of the highest awards in the country, to help with that data collection effort.
