On this West Virginia Morning, Jim Dahlman set out to learn more about Appalachia in 2013 by walking Daniel Boone’s Wilderness Road from Tennessee into Kentucky. He is a journalist and professor of Communications at Milligan College in Tennessee, and decided to document his walk.
From that trip, he wrote “A Familiar Wilderness: Searching for Home on Daniel Boone’s Road.” It is a collection of history, modern observations and interviews with people he met along the way.
Eric Douglas spoke to Dahlman over Skype to find out more.
Also on today’s show, Roane General Hospital is expanding over the next year and a half. Roxy Todd reports the small rural hospital will offer more preventative and specialty care as a result of the upgrade.
And iconic singer-songwriter and producer Nick Lowe was at the helm of Elivis Costello’s first five albums. It was Costello who popularized Lowe’s song “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love and Understanding.” At a recent appearance on Mountain Stage, Lowe and his band, Los Straightjackets, reprised the hit.
