Inside Appalachia Takes Another Look At Black Lung and the End of 1 Miner's Journey

West Virginia Morning
West Virginia Public Broadcasting

On this West Virginia Morning, this week’s episode of Inside Appalachia looks at a disease that at least 2,000 former miners struggle with -- black lung. An NPR investigation found that miners are finding it tough to get help from doctors, lawyers, coal companies, and many lawmakers.

In the midst of this data, our newsroom has been helping the Ohio Valley ReSource and NPR collect many personal stories with miners and their families. This morning, we’ll hear one man’s story. Host Jessica Lilly has been following Robert Bailey’s journey since 2014, and has this remembrance.

And this week’s episode of Mountain Stage highlights some of the best cover songs performed on the show. As part of that collection, jazz and blues vocalist Catherine Russell put her own touch on "New Speedway Boogie," a song written by Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia, first popularized by The Grateful Dead. We hear Russell performing on Mountain Stage back in 2006 with our song of the week.
