052120 A Glimpse Into W.Va.'s Nursing Homes And The Road Ahead To Limit The Spread Of COVID-19

On this West Virginia Morning, we check in with the state’s nursing homes coping with the coronavirus pandemic. We also hear an update on how restaurants across the Ohio Valley are approaching reopening measures.

Indoor dining at restaurants across the Ohio Valley is “reopening” under new guidelines after being closed due to COVID-19. Kentucky and West Virginia are requiring these businesses to at least temporarily reduce maximum occupancy, among other social distancing recommendations. Becca Schimmel has details of how restaurants in the region are adapting.

Southern West Virginia Health System provides primary care to several clinics across 6 counties, and it just received more than $900,000 to expand telehealth services. Emily Allen reports.

The coronavirus has swept like fire through nursing homes across the country, infecting and killing thousands of people. In West Virginia, approximately half of the coronavirus deaths in the state are linked to nursing homes. Emily Corio reports on this deadly trend and efforts in the state to contain it.

As coronavirus deaths in nursing homes mount, there’s a push nationwide to test all nursing home residents and staff. West Virginia was the first state in the country to mandate comprehensive testing. Even with widespread testing complete, patient advocates say nursing homes will continue to need support and oversight to protect one of West Virginia’s most vulnerable populations. Emily Corio also brings us this report.
