The publisher, Claudia Whitworth, is rejecting the idea that people only want to hear negative stories. Also, in this show, we hear an excerpt from the latest episode of Us & Them exploring whether the topic of abortion has become too heavily divided to discuss differences civilly.
In the latest episode of Inside Appalachia, we learn about a newspaper which is still thriving after 80 years. The Roanoke Tribune is a family-owned, African American newspaper. Back in early March, as the pandemic was just starting to unfold, reporter Mason Adams went to see the newspaper staff in action and learn about how they’ve survived, all these years.
It’s no secret. Abortion is a highly polarized issue. It’s something WVPB’s program Us & Them addressed last November in an episode called “Abortion Divides.” Last week, that program was honored with an award from the Public Media Journalists Association. In the episode, host Trey Kay speaks with West Virginians about this emotionally-charged subject. While reporting this story, Trey witnessed heated exchanges between protesters and supporters of abortion rights. This made him wonder: is abortion a subject that’s become too hot to handle? And is it possible for people to speak civilly about their differences? Here’s an excerpt from that Us & Them program.
