Appalachian, Family-Owned Energy Drink ‘Dr. Enuf’ Turns 70

West Virginia Morning
West Virginia Public Broadcasting

On this West Virginia Morning, we’ll hear about one of the world’s earliest energy drinks that was manufactured right here in Appalachia. We also bring you this week’s Mountain Stage Song of the Week.

Today, energy drink companies like Red Bull and Monster, are some of the most popular brands across the country, and the industry is worth more than $12 billion. But a small, family-run business in Johnson City, Tennessee has been producing Dr. Enuf for 70 years. In this week’s episode of Inside Appalachia, we hear a story from WETS’ Fred Sauceman about one of the country’s earliest “energy drinks.”

You can hear the rest of this episode of Inside Appalachia on Sunday at 7:00 a.m. and again at 6:00 p.m. here on West Virginia Public Broadcasting – or find it wherever you get your podcasts.

Also, in this show, JT Nero and Allison Russell release music as Birds of Chicago. Joined by guitarist Steve Dawson, the group has our song of the week with the tune "Lodestar," which appears on Love in Wartime, the band's 2018 full-length release.

To hear more, tune in Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 p.m. on West Virginia Public Broadcasting.
