A Look Back at the 2018 W.Va. Legislative Session, Looking Ahead to Final Hours

The Legislature Today

On The Legislature Today, we bring you a special hour-long broadcast from the Capitol building in Charleston. Host Andrea Lannom chats with House Finance Chairman Del. Eric Nelson, R-Kanawha, and House Finance Vice Chairman Del. Mick Bates, D-Raleigh, on the status of budget discussions with only one day left in the regular 2018 state Legislative session. We also look back at some of the major issues that unfolded over the last two months in our reporter roundtable.

The 2018 state Legislative session will be remembered for the historic 9-day teachers' strike that brought thousands to the Capitol and resulted in the passage of a 5 percent pay raise for teachers, school service personnel and state troopers. As the budget differences are worked out, the pay raise is on its way to covering all public employees. Also as a result of the work stoppage, a PEIA task force has been established by Governor Jim Justice.

Videographer Russ Barbour brings us a recap of the sights and sounds from the 2018 session.

Also in this episode, Lannom is joined by statehouse reporters Ryan Quinn and Jake Zuckerman of the Charleston Gazette-Mail and Brad McElhinny of West Virginia MetroNews to discuss the flurry of activity at the Capitol in this week’s reporter roundtable.
